Peter E Laurie

Biography

Pete Laurie joined Hanna & Plaut in June 2025. Pete handles a wide range of civil litigation, with an emphasis on insurance coverage disputes, bad faith claims, large property losses, and appeals. Over the years, he has represented insurance carriers, national retailers, and other businesses in courts across Texas and California, both at the trial and appellate levels. Pete has successfully argued cases before the Texas Third, Fifth, and Fourteenth Courts of Appeal, with published opinions in complex administrative matters.

Before entering private practice in Texas, Pete served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Tax Division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office. There, he represented the Texas Workforce Commission in litigation and appeals, securing multiple precedents on sovereign immunity, statutory standing, and administrative jurisdiction. Pete also previously practiced in California, where his work included insurance coverage litigation and the defense of government entities in civil rights and medical malpractice claims.

Pete brings over two decades of litigation experience to his clients, along with a reputation for intellectual rigor, strategic thinking, and persuasive written and oral advocacy. His ability to simplify complex legal concepts reflects both his background in education and his service as a United States Marine Corps machine gunner, two roles that sharpened his communication, discipline, and leadership under pressure.

Before returning to the law full-time, Pete earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Texas State University. Pete earned his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law and completed his undergraduate studies in English and Philosophy at the University of California, Davis. Away from work, he stays active through Muay Thai and recreational lacrosse, both of which tap into his competitive nature.
